The San Antonio
Natatorium was built in June of 1981 on the old Sidney Lanier High
School Track. City Council Member, Henry Cisneros, was highly instrumental
in working with the SAISD School Board in developing the concept.
At the time...the 3.2 million dollar facility was the flagship facility
for the City of San Antonio and South Texas. The venue has provided
numerous High School, International and local Age-Group competitions.
The Olympic Team from Australia trained at the San Antonio in December
of 2000. Olympic Gold Medallists Misty Hyman, Bruce Hayes, Grant
Hackett and Karin Perkins have graced the water of the San Antonio
Natatorium.
Built with Federal Grant money it was earmarked
to allow inner city children an opportunity to develop and compete
in competitive swimming and diving. The facility has produced an
Olympic Trial Qualifier, numerous UIL State Qualifiers (Swimming
and Diving), Regional Champions and, has serviced over 45,000 SAISD
Swimmers and Divers. The facility boasts the only separate diving
well facility in San Antonio.
Roger
Rodriquez was the original Aquatics Coordinator for SAISD from
1978 to 1981. Don Walker has been the Aquatics Director for
SAISD since February 1, 1982.
