Welcome

The Dyslexia and Related Disorders Department of the San Antonio Independent School District provides appropriate services for students who are identified as dyslexic by trained dyslexia evaluators who administer a battery of assessments. Data from these assessments is analyzed to determine whether the student demonstrates characteristics of dyslexia.

Dyslexic students are born with a difficulty in learning to read, write and/or spell despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunities. When a student is not making adequate process, despite best practices and research-based reading interventions, the Student Support Team (SST) process begins. If, through this process, it is determined that the student is not making the needed progress, the Student Support Team may determine a dyslexia referral is needed. (PLEASE NOTE: Home schooled and private school students who live in the SAISD boundaries are not eligible for dyslexia screenings or evaluation.)

Characteristics of dyslexic individuals include:

  • Difficulty reading single words in isolation;
  • Difficulty accurately decoding nonsense or unfamiliar words;
  • Slow, inaccurate or labored oral reading; and/or
  • Difficulty learning to spell.

Students identified with characteristics of dyslexia should also be evaluated for Section 504 support.
