Credit
by Exam(CBE)
School districts
are required by state law Education Code 28.023, 19 TAC 74.24 and
current State Board of Education rules to provide Credit by Examination
twice per year.
Credit by Examination(CBE),
is the process by which an eligible student may take an approved
exam covering the essential knowledge and skills for a grade or
course in which he/she has had NO PRIOR FORMAL INSTRUCTION.
For secondary
courses, each semester of a one credit course is tested with a separate
exam; therefore, a student attempting to earn 1 credit must earn
at least 90% on both semester exams. A student who scores 90% on
only one semester exam will receive 1/2 credit. For elementary grades,
a student must take four exams - language arts/reading, math, science,
social studies - and must earn at least 90% on all four to advance.

Previous
Attempted Course Exam(PACE)
The district
will continue to offer high school students an opportunity to take
exams for courses in which they have had prior instruction but did
not earn credit. In SAISD this program is called Previously Attempted
Course Exams (PACE).
PACE Testing
Procedures
Beginning with the 1999-2000 school year, the PACE exams were ordered
from Texas Tech University. They will be the same exams used for
credit-by-examination; however, the minimum passing score is 70%
for PACE applicants (students WITH PRIOR INSTRUCTION
in the course).
PACE applicants
must pay $14 for each PACE exam for which they apply. These exams
measure course work by semester; therefore, an applicant must pay
for each semester exam separately. For example, if a student applies
to take both semester exams for a two-semester course, s/he must
pay $28 ($14 for 1st semester + $14 for 2nd semester).
The Testing
Department will continue to coordinate PACE applications, designate
PACE test dates and order the exams for all district applicants.
