THE SHORT HISTORY OF YOUR SCHOOL

Louis W. Fox Academic and Technical High School is the oldest public high school in South Texas. It was established in 1879, and the first buildings on the present site were opened in 1882. San Antonio High School, the first official name of the school, was part of the City of San Antonio School District, and a portion of the money for its initial operation came from the Freedman's Bureau. It remained part of the City School District until the San Antonio Independent School District was inaugurated in 1899.

In 1917 the original structure was dismantled to make way for a new building on the present site. At the same time a new high school was established in the district to alleviate overcrowding, and this school was renamed Main Avenue High School. The thrust of the instructional program changed in 1932 when Jefferson High School was opened. Jefferson was designated an academic school, and the former school became San Antonio Vocational and Technical School.

In 1961, as an honor to the longtime principal of the school, the Board of education changed the name of the school to Louis W. Fox Vocational and Technical School. In 1968, acting under the new endorsed school boundary proposals, the Board of Education redirected the program of the school back to a comprehensive program including both academic and vocational curricula, and the school's present name, Louis W. Fox Academic and Technical High School, reflects this direction of its instructional program. The school is now housed in quarters which were completed in 1975.
