Gil Garza was born and raised in Edinburg, Texas. He attended Edinburg schools all of his life and in 1970 graduated from Edinburg High School. In 1975 he graduated from Pan American University with a bachelor's degree in History.
Coach Garza's career started with Edinburg School District in September of 1975. In 1983 Coach Garza became the head football and baseball coach as well as the Athletic Director in Edcouch-Elsa. In 1988 he moved on to the PSJA as head football coach and Athletic Director. He led the Bears to the state play-offs the last 3 years. The school year 1990-91 was very special for him because as the head coach of both football and baseball teams, the Bears won Area Championships in both sports. In 1992, he was named the full time athletic director at PSJA I.S.D. and was in charge of three high schools and five middle schools.
Mr. Garza states: "Athletics has always been an important part of my life. Growing up, I participated in community and school athletics. I learned to compete, respect, communicate and work with my coaches and teammates. As I direct girls' and boys' athletic programs, I keep education as the central focus of all decisions made by me and my staff. As a result, our athletes are very successful and have experienced many "play-off competitions."
As we achieve our goals, I look toward new challenges to improve our athletic program.
Coach Garza is married to Marissa and they have 3 beautiful children;
Lauren, Katie and Jacob.
