The Dyslexia and Related Disorders Department of the San Antonio Independent School District provides appropriate services for students who are identified as dyslexic by trained dyslexia evaluators who administer a battery of assessments. Data from these assessments is analyzed to determine whether the student demonstrates characteristics of dyslexia. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. Dyslexic students are born with a difficulty in learning to read, write and/or spell despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunities. When a student is not making adequate process, despite best practices, high quality instruction, and scientific research-based reading interventions, the Response to Intervention (RtI) process is initiated. If, through this process, it is determined that the student is not making the needed progress, the Response to Intervention Team may determine a dyslexia referral is needed. PLEASE NOTE: Home schooled and private school students who live in the SAISD boundaries are not eligible for dyslexia screening or evaluation. Characteristics of dyslexic individuals include:
