Meet Rocky As He Explains How North America was Settled By Europeans!

In the second unit, Coming to America: Exploring and Colonizing America, students will investigate the different reasons why people settled in North America. (1565 - 1763) They will also explore where people settled, how they made money, and how they governed each other.

Students are expected to explain when, where, and why groups of people explored, colonized, and settled in the United States, including the search for religious freedom and economic gain. They are also to describe the accomplishments of significant individuals during the colonial period, including William Bradford, Anne Hutchinson, William Penn, John Smith, John Wise, and Roger Williams.

Students are to investigate the economic systems of Colonial America and should be able to explain the economic patterns of early European colonists as well as identify the major industries of colonial America. Finally, junior historians should be able to describe the development of the free enterprise system in colonial America.

Students are to explore the governments of Colonial American and should be able to identify and compare the systems of government of early European colonists, including representative government and monarchy. They should also be able to identify examples of representative government in the American colonies, including the Mayflower Compact and the Virginia House of Burgesses.
