Meet Carla As She Explains the Founding Documents and How They Help Us!

Government of the people, by the people, for the people. Students will understand the purpose of government, the people responsible for shaping the new nation, and the documents to support the framework for the government in A New Nation: Founding of the United States. How our basic rights and freedoms are protected are explained through the study of the principles of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

To find out why the Constitution was written, students will have to conduct investigations in order to identify the issues that led to the creation of the U.S. Constitution, including the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. They will also be able identify the contributions of individuals responsible for the Constitution, including James Madison, and others such as George Mason, Charles Pinckney, and Roger Sherman.

Our historical explorers will be able explain the purposes of the U.S. Constitution, as identified in the Preamble, and explain the reasons for the creation of the Bill of Rights and its importance.

Fifth graders are going to investigate the Constitution so they can identify and explain the basic functions of the three branches of government, identify the reasons for and describe the system of checks and balances outlined in the U.S. Constitution, and distinguish between national and state governments and compare their responsibilities in the U.S. federal system.
