Parent Connections for Social Studies - 5th Grade Semester 2: Civil War

President Lincoln explains one of the most difficult challenges to the United States, the Civil War.

What causes a country to go to war against itself? During the study of Civil War: Dividing and Rebuilding the Union, students will investigate and identify the causes of the Civil War, including sectionalism, states’ rights, slavery, and the effects of the Civil War, including Reconstruction and the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U. S. Constitution.

Students will also be able to identify and compare leadership qualities of the Civil War leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, U.S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee.
