Parent Connections for Social Studies - 5th Grade Semester 2: A New Century

Ally the Airplane describes the United States at the turn of the 20th Century!

A New Century: Transitioning to a Modern America, is the study of the changes in technology and the impact of new discoveries on economic patterns. Students will analyze various issues and events of the 20th century such as industrialization, urbanization, and increased use of oil and gas. Geographic patterns to include migration from rural to urban settings and exportation of fossil fuels will be key components of study.

5th Grade investigators explore the issues of the United States at the turn of the Twentieth Century including analyzing industrialization, urbanization, and the increased use of oil and gas as natural resources.

Students turn their attention to the economic development of the United States during this time. Junior economists will investigate how people in different parts of the United States earned a living during this time. They will also analyze the effects of immigration, migration, and limited resources on the economic development and growth of the United States around 1900.

Students will also be able to describe the impact of mass production, specialization, and division of labor on the economic growth of the United States as well as explain the impact of American ideas about progress and equality of opportunity on the economic development and growth of the United States.

Students will also learn about those who made a difference during this time period including Jane Addams and Susan B. Anthony!

Students will also be able to explain the significance of important landmarks that were built around this time including the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore.

Finally, students will identify how scientific discoveries, technological innovations, and the rapid growth of technology industries have advanced the economic development of the United States, including the Transcontinental Railroad.
