Parent Connections for Social Studies - 5th Grade Semester 2: Challenging Times

As the United States grew, so did its influence as a world power. This unit of study, Challenging Times: Emerging as a World Power, will focus on the influence of the United States on the world stage. Students will identify the accomplishments of individuals who have made contributions to society in the areas of military actions and politics such as World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.

Our Junior Historians are presented with multiple opportunities to analyze various issues and events of the 20th century such as the Great Depression, and the world wars. By the end of their investigations, they should be able to identify the accomplishments of individuals and groups such as Dwight Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Tuskegee Airmen, and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team who have made contributions to American society.

Students will also have an opportunity to explore and describe the origins and significance of national celebrations such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

All Fifth Graders will investigate the economic issues of the Great Depression by explaining how supply and demand affects consumers in the United States and evaluating the effects of supply and demand on business, industry, and agriculture.
