Parent Connections for Social Studies - 5th Grade Semester 2: The United States Today

The United States Today: Out of Many One explores those aspects that make up the American culture and the contributions made by various racial, ethnic, and religious groups. Students will learn the significance of important landmarks, including the White House, the Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore, various patriotic symbols, including Uncle Sam, and political symbols such as the donkey and elephant. This unit will also focus on the rights we possess as citizens and the civic responsibility of citizens to protect those rights by participating in the democratic process.

All 5th graders will discover the impact of American ideas about progress and equality of opportunity on the economic development and growth of the United States.

Our junior investigators will also be able to explain the role of the individual including explaining the duty individuals have to participate in civic affairs at the local, state, and national levels and how to contact elected and appointed leaders in local, state, and national governments.

Students will also be able to identify the similarities and differences within and among various racial, ethnic, and religious groups in the United States including describing customs and traditions of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups in the United States. Finally, they will be able to summarize the contributions of people of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups to our national identity.
