Parent Connections for Social Studies - First Grade Semester 1 - Remembering Traditions

Listen as Lady Liberty Explains what traditions are in the United States and Texas!

How do cultural celebrations contribute to our American identity? As students study celebrations, customs, and patriotic symbols during Remembering Traditions, they will identify, describe, and compare the origins of holidays and examine state and national symbols such as being able to recite and explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag and the Pledge to the Texas Flag.

Students will describe and explain various cultural traditions that contribute to the American Melting Pot.

Students will also investigate the origins of customs, holidays, and celebrations of the community, state, and nation such as San Jacinto Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.

Students will discover the importance of various beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of families and communities and explain the way folktales and legends such as Aesop's fables reflect beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of communities.

Finally, students will be able to explain state and national patriotic symbols, including the United States and Texas flags, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and the Alamo and identify anthems and mottoes of Texas and the United States
