|Parent Connections for Social Studies - Third Grade Semester 2 - Making a Difference|
Charles the Fireman explains what it means to make a difference
Making a Difference in the Community is demonstrated by modeling good citizenship. In this unit of study, students will identify individuals, including Pierre-Charles L’Enfant, Benjamin Banneker, and Benjamin Franklin, who have helped to shape communities. Helen Keller, Clara Barton, and contemporary figures such as Ruby Bridges and first responders will be a few of the individuals studies who have exemplified good citizenship.
Students will be able to give examples of community changes that result from individual or group decisions and identify examples of actions individuals and groups can take to improve the community. Heroic deeds of state and national heroes, including Hector P. Garcia, James A. Lovell, Harriet Tubman, Juliette Gordon Low, and Todd Beamer will be a part of this lesson.
