Parent Connections for Social Studies - Eighth Grade Semester 2 - Civil War

President Lincoln discusses the War Between the States, or the American Civil War

What causes a country to go to war against itself? During the study of Civil War: The Endangered Union, students will investigate and identify the causes of the Civil War, including sectionalism, states’ rights, and slavery.

The will also visit significant events, including the firing on Fort Sumter, the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. They will read the Emancipation Proclamation and find out why Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.

Students will examine the effects of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, especially with a focus on Reconstruction. Investigators will be able explain the roles played by significant individuals, including Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, and Abraham Lincoln.

Students will analyze Abraham Lincoln’s ideas about liberty, equality, union, and government as contained in his first and second inaugural addresses and the Gettysburg Address and contrast them with the ideas contained in Jefferson Davis’s inaugural address.
