We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The Preamble sets out the six main reasons for the Constitution:

  1. Establish a stronger government than what they had under the Articles of Confederation
  2. Improve the court system
  3. To have peace in all of the states
  4. Protect the country from enemies
  5. To have good living conditions
  6. To have freedoms for themselves and future generations

The Preamble also states the the people are the authority for the Constitution.
