Memorial Day Observance
Welcome to the Social Studies Department's Memorial Day page! The whole purpose of this page is to honor those men and women who paid the ultimate price in the defense of freedom for not only ourselves but for others around the world!
This web page contains observance procedures, lesson ideas, and links to other excellent websites.
Sample Memorial Day Program for
Schools
- Have a representative group of students/class meet at the flag pole to:
- Observe respectful silence during the raising of the flag.
- Recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
- Sing the national anthem either as a group, joined by a choir, members of the school’s band, or a prerecording, and play or sing other examples of patriotic music and present the meaning behind the music.
- Retell the history of Memorial Day and the reasons for the current observance. Guest speakers can include students, elected officials, professors, or historians.
- Lower the flag to half-staff until noon to honor our fallen heroes.
- Conduct a moment of silence in reflection for those who have died while in service to our nation.
