Network Connection Issues

It appears that I cannot access the internet in my room.

1. Check to see that the network cable is attached to the computer as well as the network drop box on the wall.

2. If you have several computers that use a hub to connect to one drop, make sure the hub is plugged into to the electrical outlet. You may need to unplug and then plug-in the hub to reset it.

3. Test your computer to see if you have an active connection by using one of the following sets of instructions based on the operating system you have.

Windows 95 / 98

1. Left click on the START BUTTON and left click on RUN.

2. In the OPEN Command Line, clear any other entry and type WINIPCFG.

3. Left click on OK.

4. Look at the line labeled IP Address. If the address starts with 169 or is all zeros, left click on RELEASE ALL. Wait a few seconds, then left click RENEW ALL. If the address stays with a 169 or all zeros you may have a inactive drop. Call the Help Desk at 281-9090 for assistance.

Windows 2000 / XP / NT

1. Left click on the START BUTTON and left click on RUN.

2. In the OPEN Command Line, clear any other entry and type CMD.

3. Left click on OK.

4. At the "C:\>" prompt type IPCONFIG.

6. Then type IPCONFIG /RENEW. If the address stays with a 169 or all zeros you may have a inactive drop. Call the Help Desk at 281-9090 for assistance.

7. When you have completed steps 1-6 above type "exit" at the prompt and you will return to Windows.
