State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR)
Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, students in grades 3-9 will be assessed with the grade or appropriate course assessment in the STAAR program. In grades 3-8, the assessments are grade based and vary on tested content areas, except that all grades will be assessed in reading and math. Starting at the point in a student's education where they begin to earn high school credits, the students will be assessed with exams based upon specific courses in the core areas. For students in the STAAR system, they will have to meet the minimum score on the specific test, as well as a total cumulative score for the content area. The students will have to meet a specific cumulative score in each content area in order to graduate. Students will be assessed and given information on their readiness for college within these assessments. There are version of the STAAR assessments for students who qualify and meet the eligibility guidelines. The versions include STAAR- Modified, STAAR- Alternate, and STAAR-L.
STAAR- Alternate will replace TAKS-Alt for all students in grades 10 and 11 for the 2011-2012 school year as well.
