School Improvement and School Choice

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) has three measures:  Reading, Mathematics and Graduation Rate (for High Schools) or Attendance Rate (for Elementary and Middle Schools).  To enter into school improvement, a campus or district must miss the same measure two years in a row.  An asterisk (*) indicates the campus is in the 2nd year of a stage and may exit school improvement.  Campuses that miss AYP for the first time do not have any school improvement status.  

San Antonio ISD was identified as Missed AYP for the 2012 school year based on Reading and Math performance.  Increasing standards and the new STAAR assessments offered challenges for students and the State of Texas.  In 2012, the state of Texas was rated Missed AYP, along with 71% of all districts in the state. 

SAISD is subject to the requirements for District Stage 3 of School Improvement for the 2012-13 school year.   The District is in the process of revising the district improvement plan to address all student educational needs, which includes promoting effective parental involvement, and will undergo corrective actions.  SAISD values feedback and suggestions from parents, staff and community members.  If you would like more information about our status or the district improvement plan, or if you have any recommendations or questions, please contact Liza Rosenthal, Accountability and Compliance Coordinator, at 210-299-1187.

School Choice:  One option for parents whose students attend a school identified in Stage 1 or higher of school improvement.  Parents were notified during the summer that they had the option to request a transfer to one of two other campuses in the district.  Parents had 30 days to respond to this request.  Additionally, students entering into a campus for the first time during the year are also offered 30 days to consider school choice.
