Finding Help in San Antonio ISD

San Antonio United Way This is the best site in San Antonio for getting help. It allows you to search for help in the different parts of town and different types of help. Very useful!

SAISD Transitions office for help with familes that are homeless.

Positive Preventions - San Antonio Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. There are community programs available here like Project Heart and as well as the linke for Bexar County Substance Abuse Resource Directory. It is a 13MB download, but has crisis hotlines, an exhaustive list of local and nation 800 numbers, emergency shelter listings, professional resources, employee assistance programs and much more. It is 135 pages long.

City of San Antonio This is the page that shows all of the services the city provides along with the links to go to those pages. It include enforcement issues, nutrition, adult education, and many other city services. Of particular note is the Community Action Program, which addresses a lot of social and counseling issues. There is a list of the centers where services are provided, along with phone numbers.

Bexar County Here the are links to the Child Welfare Board, the jail, bail bond board, jobs, even a recently arrested search site.

VIA Bus routes/passes. Helps get organized and around town.

San Antonio Fighting Back - A consortium of over 50 agencies including SAISD to provide information and help regarding Emergency Assistance, Counseling/Family education, Elder Assistance, Child Abuse, Victims of Violent Crime, Pregnancy and Family Planning, Healthcare, Social Services, and Group Homes/Transitional Living.

Child Protective Services Child and Adult Protective Services, Adoption and Foster Care, Child Care Facilities, and People with disabilities.

Texas Attorney General's Office - Child Support, Cybercrime,(how to report child predators, child pornography crimes, child privacy act, and breach of computer crimes) etc. There is even a Kid's Page.

Texas Medicaid You can download the Application of Assistance, The Consumer Guide to Better Health Care (Spanish version) helps explain the Medicaid program and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

The ARC of San Antonio This site is for parents of children with special needs. Services include child care, work training, case management, day habilitation, and support services.

LD Online "The World's Leading website on learning disabilities and ADHD". Loads of background, parent advice, multimedia, classroom management, etc. You will want to spend some time here as this is truly a comprehensive site.

Social Security Online , this site is the official website of the U.S. Social Security Administration.

Learn how to talk to your son/daughter about sexual issues.  Help you children make healthy choices.  

Connect with kids is a multi-media, education company focused on helping parents and educators teach life skills, prevention, character, health, and wellness.  

The CareLink program is open to San Antonio/Bexar County residents who do not have health insurance and are not eligible for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program.

CinemaTherapy Detailed and ground-breaking site from the University of Alabama-Birmingham for School Counselors and practitioners on using films in the classroom to effect change.

Center for Social and Emotional Education Promotes "social and emotional competencies: There are some lesson plans and videos.

Character Education (citizenship) Resource Guide The State of Indiana put together a "comprehensive plan of good citizenship instruction". There are 4 lesson plans for every grade level from Kindergarten through 12th grade and most of them are guidance/character related! It can be dowloaded in 'grade chunks' or the whole thing: 1.2 MB.

Center for the 4th and 5th R's This Cortland, NY College site focuses on Respect and Responsibility. A twice-a-year newsletter archive features a treasure trove of articles of use to school counselors.

Teach Tolerance A site with many resources to help people get along better with activities, Top-Ten lists, and resources you can order - for free! Here is the order form. There is even a kids page.

Free Rice For every vocabulary word you get correct, the sponsor donates rice to the United Nations.  For adult and children, it puts each person at the appropriate level based on  performance.

Career Builder Counselor career resource focusing on jobs available and skills needed to get them.

CareerZone A New York site to explore different work clusters with hundreds of job with links to a lot of information the job, whether it is in demand, and many have videos show people doing that job.

First Gov. For Kids Federal site for kids, including career links for specific careers for elementary kids as well as middle school. Educator and high school sites are also included.

Project Quest An innovative San Antonio job training program that focuses on healthcare, information technology, and installation, maintenance, and repair technologies.

Alamo Work Force Career exploration part of site is very good! It presents jobs available in San Antonio, with job profiles and videos on each career.

Interview Network A great source of interview advice and practice. Also a lot of resume information as well.

JobStar A career resouce from California that includes some excellent career guides for everyone. There are also tips and guides to the job search, an "Ask Electra" advice column as well as an excellent resume page!

North Carolina SOICC Resources for elementary career assessment, planning, and exploration.
