Managing Hazardous Chemicals
- Maintain a current inventory. Include:
- Chemical or product name
- Manufacturer or supplier
- Container size and type
- (If > 55 gallons or 500 lbs.) maximum and average amount on hand
- Determine what the need is and what materail's will do the job
- Obtain & review current product information sheets, Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on new or different sheet before you order.
- Select chemical or material based upon:
- Health and physical hazards
- Environmental hazards
- Waste or Using / storing less chemical products
- Less toxic / hazardous substitutes
- Order
- Only (hazardous) chemicals with current (& reviewed) MSDS or SDS
- Only enough material needed
- Used during current school year
- Used within expiration date
- Storage and Handling
- Do not mix chemicals
- Use personal protective equipment and inspect / check emergency equipment
- Properly label, store, and secure chemicals and chemical wastes
- Use oldest chemical / product first
- Safely control and clean up spills
- Do’s and Do not’s
- Label all containers
- Read and follow manufacturer instructions
- Make MSDS/SDSs available
- Do not bring chemicals / products from home
- Revew and have an MSDS for all trial chemicals / products
- Only keep what you need
- Properly dispose of wastes
