The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, and low cost or free lunches to more than 31 million children each school day.

The meals served in the National School Lunch Program must meet strict nutrition standards based on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  The Act directed the United States Department of Agriculture to update the nutrition standards for the National School Lunch Program.  These new standards went into effect at the beginning of school year 2012-2013.

The new standards increase the availability of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the school menu and sets strict calorie limits to ensure age-appropriate meals for all grade levels.

All SAISD lunch menus meet the new standards set by the USDA.
