Head Start

About Us

SAISD has provided high quality Head Start services to children and their families for 3 years.  During the 2010-2011 Program Year, the program served almost 3,000 children and families at 36 sites.

SAISD Mission

To transform SAISD into a national model urban school district where every child graduates and is educated so that he or she is prepared to be a contributing member of the community.

Head Start parents and teachers work together to ensure each child receives individualized educational instruction according to their strengths and needs.  Educational services are designed to ensure all children grow physically, socially, intellectually, and emotionally.

Provide high-quality educational services to enrolled children through the use of curricula which guide classroom instruction.  All curricula utilized are research based, adopted by the state of Texas, in alignment with the Texas Pre-k guidelines and the 11 domains within the Head Start Childhood Development and Early Learning Framework.

Transitioning Children to Kindergarten

Activities to prepare children for Kindergarten are implemented at the start of the program year.  The program designs services to ensure a comprehensive focus on the importance of children’s health, mental and dental health, nutrition and wellness.  Parents and families play a pivotal role in serving as their child’s primary teacher and lifelong advocate to reinforce and encourage their child’s development and learning both in Head Start and in future years.

The program coordinates with other groups to provide high quality services that benefit children with disabilities and their families.

Health/Mental Health

Comprehensive health care services are coordinated for every child to identify and address health, mental health, and dental problems early so that they do not interfere with a child’s learning and development.

Head Start assists families in meeting each child’s nutritional needs while promoting the development of good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle.
