(Note: You may choose to print the pages from the website if an LCD projector is not available.)
- Have students write in journals to answer prompt:
Important things to remember when adding or subtracting decimals.
- Have student pairs complete a list of reminders using journal entries.
- Using Chart Paper or section on board, create a class list of reminders. Post list in classroom.
- Review Adding and Subtracting Decimals using the TEA Interactive Study Guide Grade 5,Objective 1.

Adding/Subtracting Decimals
Materials: Newspaper sales adds, scissors, glue.
- Have students work independently to complete the following project:
Using a catalogue or sales ads, find 6 Back to School items that total approximately $50.00, without exceeding the price total. Cut and glue items and prices on a sheet of paper. Show your addition work. Find the difference using the total spent and $50.Focus:

-Have students review Adding/Subtracting Decimals using the TEA Interactive Study Guide-Grade 6, Objective 1.
-Have students write responses on paper, as you go through learn it. Allow volunteers to type answers on computer.
- Ask students to create a Venn Diagram on paper. As a guided practice activity, model for students how to compare their student list of reminders with the reminders from the Interactive Study Guide.
Ask: How were the two alike? How were the two different? How important are these reminders?Focus:
Adding/Subtracting Decimals
Materials: Student journals
- Write the following decimal numerals on board:
0.15, 3.06, 0.98, 10.1
Ask student to review numerals and tell what each decimal could represent (i.e. prices, weights, time)
- Work with whole group writing an addition problem using the numerals provided. Allow students to write problem in journals.
- Have partners use same decimal numerals to write a different addition problem.
- Have partners share problems with other pairs and find solutions.
- Have students write in journals: Prompt- What strategy did you use to solve the problem? What decimal addition reminders did you use to help you find a solution?Focus:
Adding/Subtracting Decimals
Materials: Student journals, index cards
- Give each student an index card and a marker (optional). Instruct each student to write a decimal numeral on index card.
- Collect cards and redistribute cards so that each student receives one card. Tell students that the number on card is the solution. Have students write an addition problem and a subtraction problem in journal, using number on card as solution.
- Arrange students in groups of 4. Give each group 3 or 4 cards. Assign groups to: a) find the sum of the cards b) find the difference between the sum and 100.
- Allow groups to share strategies.
- Model solutions on board for all to see.
