Mentor FAQs
I mentor both a first and a second-year teacher. What training should I attend?
Attend Mentorship 1.1 and 1.2. This is the eight-hour training that addresses the needs of the first-year teacher. As such, it provides the same training mentors of second-year teachers get in their four-hour training and much more. You need not attend 2.1 and 2.2 for mentors of second-year teachers.
My mentee’s alternative certification program requires me to attend their training for mentors. Do I have to attend SAISD Mentorship training as well?
No. If your protégé’s (mentee’s) alternative certification program requires mentors to attend their training, that program is responsible for meeting the state’s requirements. You are welcome to attend SAISD’s training, but you are not required to do so.
My mentee’s alternative certification program sent me something to read and/or do online, but it does NOT offer training. Do I need to attend SAISD Mentorship training?
Yes. In order to be a mentor, you must have research-based mentor training.
How do I complete the Observation Protocol Worksheet?
Mentors should work with their protégés to complete the first page in the pre-observation conference. NOTE: You are asked in item 8 to attach the form or protocol you will use to collect data during the observation. The attachment should not include the actual data collected. That data belongs to the protégé! All you should attach is the blank form or format (steps or protocol) for collecting the data.
Following the observation, you should complete the second page, planning questions to be used to promote the protégé’s reflection and analysis of her/his own teaching following the observation. The first item should be some form of: “How did you think it went?” as trained in Mentorship 1.1 or 2.1. using the worksheet, you will prepare your questions in advance, but you may adapt or not use them if, through the give and take of the post-observation conference, you find they are not needed.
I was not made a mentor until January, how should I complete the Mentoring Logs?
Your first log entry will be the date you were assigned to your protégé (mentee). From that point on, meet weekly with your protégé. NOTE: when your school’s Mentor Coordinator signs the log s/he confirms the date you were assigned to mentor.
I began mentoring in August. Do I need to reconstruct August and September mentoring meetings for the logs?
No. We asked that you begin your logs in October.
I mentor two teachers. Will I be paid the same stipend as those who mentor one teacher?
No. You will be paid for both teachers. Be sure to submit separate forms (D34-C and mentoring logs).
