Carol M. White PE3 (PEP) Grant

In 2011, the San Antonio ISD Health and PE department received a three year, 1.5 million dollar federal government Carol White PEP grant for Physical Education.  With the support of the Carol White (PEP) grant, SAISD is using technology to develop programs to improve and expand our physical education program for students in K-12 by undertaking instruction in healthy eating habits for good nutrition and increasing opportunities for physical activity to improve overall physical health.

  • Randomly selected students will get a chance to wear pedometers, which will record the amount of activity students have over a specified period of time (four days for K-4 grade students and seven days for 5-12 grade students).
  • Students will receive more information from their Physical Education teacher on each campus. The data will be collected from students five times during the school’s first year and four times after that.  The data will be downloaded into a program that will give the district data on the average activity level of our students.
  • We will use this data along with surveys on nutrition and eating habits to develop health, nutrition, and physical education programs to empower students stay active and healthy for a lifetime.
