May 14, 2010
May 15 (Sat) — Gifted & Talented/Advanced Placement Conference
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road

Educators from area school districts are invited to attend this conference hosted by SAISD’s Department of Academic Services.  

May 15 (Sat) — Health and Law Professions Advisory Committee/Fox Tech alum meeting
9 a.m. at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.

UTSA president and Fox Tech alum Dr. Ricardo Romo – along with UHS President and Chief Executive Officer George B. Hernández Jr. - will be among the main speakers. Topics will include the future of healthcare workforce, and incoming 9th graders will explain why they chose the Fox Tech Health Professions Magnet. Opening this fall, it joins the established Law Professions Magnet as Fox Tech transitions to a Magnet high school.    

May 15 (Sat) — Family Fitness Challenge and Wellness Fair
9 a.m. to noon at Poe Middle School, 814 Aransas Ave.

SAISD families are encouraged to get on the wellness wagon through attending this and other upcoming health-related fairs. Services will include diabetes, cholesterol and other screenings, CPR training, body mass index measurements, Zumba dance exhibitions, table tennis demonstrations, and classes on cooking and nutrition.

May 15 (Sat) — SAISD Secondary Teacher Job Fair
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marriott Plaza Hotel Hidalgo Ballroom, 555 S. Alamo St.

Initial screening interviews will be held for fully-certified educators and teacher candidates enrolled in alternative certification programs who are qualified to teach grades 6-12. Applicants may park free nearby at SAISD’s Central Office lot, 141 Lavaca St. The application process begins online at www.saisd.net.

May 17 (Mon) — School Board meeting
5:30 p.m. at Hirsch Elementary School, 4826 Sea Breeze Drive
May 18 (Tues) — Community meeting
6 p.m. at Foster Elementary School, 6718 Pecan Valley Drive

School Board Vice President and District 3 representative Carlos Villarreal will present an overview of the state of the district, and on the first phase of SAISD’s long‐range improvement plans.

May 18 (Tues) — A Night of Champions
6:30 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta next to Alamo Stadium

In the spotlight will be championship teams and outstanding individual athletes from throughout SAISD.

May 19 (Wed) — PTA Appreciation Luncheon
11:30 a.m. at Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta St.

Principals will be guests of honor at this PTA final gathering for 2009-10.

May 20 (Thurs) — Financial Literacy class graduation
9 a.m. at Frost Bank, 100 W. Houston St. at Main Avenue

Economically-savvy students from SAISD’s Highlands High School will be treated to a commencement ceremony and luncheon in honor of their successful completion of this program sponsored by Frost Bank.

May 20 (Thurs) — Career on Wheels Days
9 to 11 a.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh St. at Babcock Road

Accompanied by the vehicles they use in the workforce, presenters will represent professions including energy, engineering, firefighting, health, law enforcement, media and public transportation. 

May 20 (Thurs) — ‘Celebrate America’ naturalization ceremony
2 p.m. at Laurie Auditorium on the Trinity University campus, 1 Trinity Place

Two SAISD 5th-graders will read their winning essays on the topic “Why I Am Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants.” The students representing Cotton and De Zavala placed second and third, respectively.

May 20 (Thurs) — Community meeting

7 p.m. at Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta St.

Each spring the most energetic, high-stepping extravaganza this side of Radio City Music Hall showcases dance teams and cheerleader performances Districtwide. 

May 21 (Fri) — Career on Wheels Day
9 to 11 a.m. at Barkly-Ruiz Academy, 1111 S. Navidad St.

Accompanied by the vehicles they use in the workforce, presenters will represent professions including energy, engineering, firefighting, health, law enforcement, media and public transportation. 

May 22 (Sat) — SAISD Elementary Teacher Job Fair
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marriott Plaza Hotel Hidalgo Ballroom, 555 S. Alamo St

Initial screening interviews will be held for fully-certified educators and teacher candidates enrolled in alternative certification programs qualified to teach pre-kinder to grade 5, or for one of the District’s pre-kinder to grade 8 academies.
