June 19 (Sat) – Family Fitness Challenge and Wellness Fair
9 a.m. to noon at Whittier Academy, 2101 Edison Drive
SAISD families are encouraged to get on the wellness wagon through attending this and other upcoming health-related fairs. Services will include diabetes, cholesterol and other screenings, and Zumba dance exhibitions. Those interested in CPR training are asked to arrive by 8:30 a.m.  

June 20 (Sun) — Presentation by Jefferson High School architecture students
2:30 p.m. at the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio, 200 E. Grayson St. Ste 100
Aspiring architects will present projects on proposed VIA Metropolitan Transit streetcar stop shelters. Students from SAISD’s Jefferson High School created the designs during a two-week summer program at Texas Tech University’s School of Architecture Curtis Clerkey Academy. The presentation follows a reception in their honor.

June 22 (Tues) — SAISD superintendent to speak to Dignowity Hill Neighborhood Association
6:30 p.m. at Bowden Elementary, 515 Willow St
Association members have invited Dr. Robert J. Durón to present an overview on the implementation of the first phase of SAISD’s long‐range restructuring plan.

Ongoing thru July 2 — ‘Seamless Summer Nutrition Program’
7 to 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 43 campuses
Free breakfast and lunch are served to anyone 18 years old and younger. The federally-funded nutrition program is available to districts like SAISD in which large numbers of students receive free meals during the school year.

Ongoing thru TBA — Driver education first session
8 a.m. to noon at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive
This course meets all state minimum requirements for young drivers of 32-classroom hours and includes seven hours in-car instruction, and seven hours observation.

Ongoing thru July 2 — High School Acceleration and Pre-AP
8 a.m. to noon at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive
Select academic subjects are offered at an accelerated pace to teens wanting a head start on the upcoming school year.

Ongoing thru July 2 — Solar Robot Energy for the Future Camp
9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Mission Verde Center at Cooper Academy, 1700 Tampico St.
Seventy SAISD elementary and middle school students are learning science through the study of alternative energy sources. Hands-on activities including building robots, cars, and boats are teaching them about energy and conservation, sources of energy, solar power, and the future of transportation. Fridays feature green field trips to places such as the solar-powered Pearl Stable, and San Antonio Water System facilities. The camp will conclude with a future-energy robotics competition. This summer learning experience is a collaborative effort between the Alamo Colleges and San Antonio Youth.

Ongoing thru July 2 — GEAR UP ‘Crimes & Clues’ Summer Enrichment Camp
9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive, and at
Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive
Tenth-graders are exploring forensic science and earning science credit by studying ballistics, prints, blood splatter, arson, decay, drug identification, and evidence gathering, and through a variety of guest speakers including representatives from the San Antonio Police Academy and Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. The camp is part of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), designed to help the class of 2012 be prepared for success in college and beyond.

Ongoing thru July 30 — PREP 2010
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at nine area colleges
Sixth through 9th graders from SAISD’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy are improving their abstract reasoning and problem-solving skills in preparation of careers in mathematics, science, technology or engineering through participation in PREP, the San Antonio Pre-freshman Engineering Program.

Ongoing thru Aug. 6 — San Antonio Summer Youth Program
7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  weekdays at 12 District schools
Sponsored by SAISD and the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, this program provides supervised recreational opportunities.
