Sponsor the NAACP Youth Council will provide school supplies, health screenings and information on how they can take proper care of themselves.

Representatives from the popular radio network Radio Disney AM 1160, H-E-B grocers and the Nestlé company will be among those helping participants get the new school year off to a great start. Activities will include healthy eating training for parents.

KSAT-TV sportscaster and Jefferson alum, Greg Simmons, is scheduled to serve as master of ceremonies when student groups including cheerleaders, the choir, Lassos, Lariats, twirlers, ROTC, color guard, football and volleyball teams converge on Pony Field to celebrate the start of the 2010-11 school year. After the ceremonial lighting of the Jefferson dome, and the singing of the school song and fight song, festivities will continue in the cafeteria. Proceeds from the sale of food and beverages will benefit the Mustang Band Boosters.

2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Rhodes Middle School, 3000 Tampico St.
Members of event sponsor the Boys & Girls Club of San Antonio will receive free school supplies, and enjoy a variety of fun activities.
Aug. 20 — SAISD Summer Graduation Ceremony
7 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
The colors of all SAISD high schools will be represented in this commencement ceremony for 12th-graders Districtwide who completed graduation requirements by attending summer school.
