Nov. 6 (Sat) — Chili Bowl Gala
5:30 p.m. at Exposition Hall at the Freeman, 3201 E. Houston St.
The community is invited to join alumni from SAISD’s Fox Tech and Lanier high schools for an evening of festivities including auctions, dinner and dancing. Masters of ceremony will be former State Board of Education member Dr. Joe Bernal and University of Texas at San Antonio President Dr. Ricardo Romo, graduates of Lanier and Fox Tech, respectively. Proceeds will be used to establish scholarships for their alma maters, and to benefit Tech’s new Health Professions Magnet Program. The gala – intended to be an annual event – was established to keep alive the spirit of the beloved Chili Bowl. This 67-year football rivalry ended in 2009 as part of Tech’s transitions into a stand-alone Magnet high school. In addition to Health Professions, the school also has the established Law and Research Magnet. Tickets are $30 per person. For more information visit www.chilibowl.org.
Nov. 10 (Wed) — SeaWorld’s Animal Ambassador Team ‘SMART’ Day presentation
1:30 p.m. at Bonham Academy, 925 S. St. Mary’s St.
Representatives from San Antonio’s marine mammal park will bring rescued animals to illustrate the importance of conservation and wildlife preservation. The team will teach students ways to make a difference in the lives of animals through everyday action, and encourage them to protect the environment and the wildlife that inhabits it. These lessons will reinforce ongoing efforts at the King William neighborhood internal charter whose focus includes conservation, endeavors so successful that Bonham has earned National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat site designation. The SeaWorld presentation will culminate SMART (Science and Math are Really Terrific) Day activities. .
Nov. 11 (Thurs) — Veterans Day ceremonies
Among the observances for those who dedicated their lives for our country will be:
● 7:30 and 8 a.m. at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.
Observances will begin with poster-sized photos of 11 of the school’s graduates who died in the Vietnam War placed on display in front of the school for a Main Street Memorial. Family members of three of the soldiers are scheduled to attend, and displays on each will be exhibited in the library, and memory frames have been prepared for their loved ones. Mayor Julián Castro will be keynote speaker at the ceremony to start at 8 a.m.
● 8:10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Briscoe Elementary School, 2015 S. Flores St.
The day’s observances will start with a flag-raising ceremony. Students will sing patriotic songs, and place flowers around the flagpole to honor veterans. Pre-kinder and kindergarten students will make posters to decorate the school, and create floats for an afternoon, indoor parade.
● 8:30 a.m. at Wilson Elementary School, 1421 Clower St.
The school patrol and other student leaders will honor veterans by escorting them to their seats while holding flags representing their respective branch of the military. Special guests will be SAISD employees and community members who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Keynote speaker will be Pct. 2, Place 1 Bexar County Justice of the Peace Steve Walker, who served in the Vietnam War. The ceremony also will include a remembrance for those fallen, missing in action and prisoners of war, and students are invited to bring photos for posting in the main hall of their loved ones who have served.
● 9 a.m. at Ogden Elementary School, 2215 Leal St.
A World War II veteran who served under the legendary General George Patton will be among the presenters,
● 10 a.m. at Lanier High School, 1514 W. Durango Blvd.
The ceremony will feature naming the JROTC building in memory of 1939 graduate John Jesse Saldaña Sr., San Antonio's first Hispanic postmaster since the Battle of the Alamo. The decorated World War II veteran who passed away earlier this year was the Lanier JROTC's first cadet commander. Concluding the observance will be a wreath laying, a 21-gun salute fired by the Alamo Silver Wings followed by echo taps from the Lanier band, and a battalion sound off.
Nov. 11 (Thurs) — Gamma Sigma Girls Investiture
11 a.m. at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.
History will be made when 250 teens representing 10 District high schools join an all-new breed of Girl Scouts. SAISD was chosen as the national pilot for Gamma Sigma Girls, which focuses on advocacy, college readiness and community. The inaugural members will be inducted in a candlelight pinning ceremony reminiscent of a sorority. Staff members from each of the 10 campuses will oversee the program for their respective high schools as advisors. Gamma Sigma Girls is initiated through the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, and part of the national organization’s efforts to make membership more relevant to today’s generation.
Nov. 12 (Fri) — Recognition for school benefactor and ribbon-cutting ceremony
10 a.m. at Crockett Elementary School, 2215 Morales St.
The family of the late Douglas Dever, who served as vice principal between 1993 and 2007, will present the school a total of $175,000 on his behalf. A trust fund of $160,000 will be set up, and $10,000 given to the Behavior Academic Class, and $5,000 to the Student Council. The ceremony also will include a ribbon cutting for the school’s new parking lot and playground.
Nov. 13 (Sat) — Our Health, Our Future Heath Fair and rummage sale
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Sponsor H-E-B will provide free glucose, blood pressure, weight and height checks and body mass indexes. Low-cost flu shots also will be offered. Proceeds from the rummage sale will benefit the all-girl school’s PTA.
Nov. 13 (Sat) — Jefferson architecture students to take the Gingerbread Design Challenge
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Pearl Studio, 200 E. Grayson St.
Teens from SAISD’s Jefferson High School will be the only non-professionals among local architects, engineers, designers and contractors competing in this tasty Iron Chef-style contest. Sponsors include the West East Design Group, Pearl, Architecture Foundation San Antonio, and the event’s beneficiary, the San Antonio Children’s Museum.
Nov. 13 (Sat) — SAISD Early Childhood Education Wellness Fair
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland at South St. Mary’s Street
Parents of 3- and 4-year-olds and their families can take advantage of information offered by a variety of organizations, nutritious food samples from local restaurants, door prizes and other giveaways, while their children can enjoy fun and games.
Nov. 13 (Sat) — SAISD student essays included in book signing
3 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 15900 La Cantera Parkway
Essays written by the District’s Rhodes Middle School students are among those in “One Lit Candle, Writings on Leadership” produced by the Boys & Girls Club.
