Qualified citizens interested in running for School Board in Districts 2, 5, and 6 may file for election and pick up packets. Election Day is Saturday, May 14.
Feb. 26 (Sat) — First Annual Mid-Year Uniform Drive/Softball Tournament
8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Rusty Lyons Softball Field, 6300 McCullough Ave.
The community can contribute to a good cause while enjoying games of softball played by six SAISD schools. Spectators are asked to bring new or gently-used uniforms and new packaged socks and undergarments to this drive and tournament sponsored by SAISD in partnership with the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
Feb. 28 (Mon) — SAISD Bond 2010 community meeting
6 p.m. at Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St.
This is one of seven meetings being held in all SAISD Trustee districts to provide information on the progress and upcoming projects for the $515 million multiyear building improvement program voters approved in November. All are hosted by the School Board and SAISD bond team.
March 1 (Tues) — Visit from the reading duck
9 to 10 a.m. at the Tynan Early Childhood Education Center, 925 Gulf St.
Homewood Suites Riverwalk hotel staff including their mascot "Lewis the Duck" will read short stories to approximately 15 Head Start program students chosen for their exceptional attendance. They and each class will receive a book and a rubber duck from Lewis.
March 1-4 — Applications accepted for pre-kinder and Head Start programs
8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive
Parents of 3- and 4-year-olds eligible for these programs my submit applications for the 2011-12 school year. Students will be selected based upon specific criteria including need. This is the first of two opportunities scheduled in March for parents to apply. For more information call 222-8591.
March 3 (Thurs) — SAISD Bond 2010 community meeting

March 5 (Sat) — JROTC District drill meet
8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wheatley Middle School, 415 Gabriel St.
Approximately 170 cadets representing all eight SAISD JROTC high schools battalions will compete in areas including: squad inspection; armed squad drill (using replicas of the 1903 Daisy Springfield rifles); platoon inspection; platoon drill; color guard Inspection; color guard; and flag folding. Lending assistance will be the District’s two LOTC middle school battalions and cadet volunteer support staff. The competition – which is free and open to the public - will conclude with an awards ceremony.
March 5 (Sat) — Dropout symposium workshops
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.
Educators, parents and students from throughout Bexar County will discuss ways to keep teens in school. The symposium will feature guest speakers, discussion panels and activities. Topics will include: facing the issues; successful strategies; parental involvement; mentoring; students taking their futures seriously; and more. Symposium sponsor is the Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators whose president, Mae Olison, also is principal of SAISD’s Washington Elementary School.
March 5 (Sat) — ‘BE COOL, PACK THE SCHOOL’ perfect attendance reward
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Two Bow Ranch, FM 37, Medina, Texas
This field trip for students from SAISD’s Page Middle School is provided by the GAMER (Giving Americans Motivational Education for the Real World) program as part of the “BE COOL, PACK THE SCHOOL” perfect attendance campaign.
