The renaming of the SAISD softball complex and dedication ceremony will honor Villarreal, who lost her three-year battle with breast cancer last October at the age of 50. Throughout that fight she was known for her strength, courage and positive outlook on life. Villarreal had coached Edison for nine of her 26 years in education. She was named the Express- News Area Coach of the Year for the 2009-10 school year after helping to guide the Lady Golden Bears to their best season and the District 28-4A title despite being on an extended leave of absence.
The renaming of the softball complex in Villarreal’s honor was proposed by SAISD School Board Assistant Secretary Olga Hernandez, whose Trustee District 6 serves the Edison High School community.
