Tour to the Presidency
Who: John Adams
What: Tour to the Presidency
When: Feb. 22 (Tues) – 9:55 to 10:40 a.m. and 12:10 to 4:15 p.m.
Where: Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.
More: America’s second president John Adams (as portrayed by teacher Carol De Leon) will provide his personal insight as he leads students at this downtown campus on an exploratory tour of our nation’s highest office. Information stations will be set up in their classroom displaying everything presidential including qualifications, background on specific presidents, and an overview of the White House and Washington, D.C. Based on the results of this fact-finding mission, students will write letters addressed to their country on whether they would like to someday be commander in chief, or instead prefer to serve their country in other capacities.
This interdisciplinary lesson will combine civics, history, social studies, reading, writing and math as the teen patriots also will need to calculate how many years it will be until they are old enough to run for president. Regardless whether the exercise will inspire any future elected leaders, it is designed to excite their interest in the political process, some of whom will be old enough to vote in their first presidential race in 2012.
In addition to Advanced Placement and regular U.S. history, De Leon also teaches AP world history.
