March 26 (Sat) — Rhodes Middle School student to recite at ‘Poetry Slam’
11:30 a.m. at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, 600 E. Market St.
Partnered with Bexar County 57th District Court Judge Toni Arteaga, Irene Salazar will be one of five select students at this inaugural fundraiser for the San Antonio Area Foundation’s new Women & Girls Development Fund. The 8th-grader from SAISD’s Rhodes Middle School and the judge – who also is serving as her mentor this spring – have created their own original poems to perform for a live audience including author Isabel Allende who will be keynote speaker. Irene’s participation is part of her membership in the Young Explorer’s Club for college-bound students sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio.

Representatives from the popular radio network Radio Disney AM 1160 will present health and fitness tips.

The public is invited to meetings of PTA chapter representatives Districtwide.

March 29 (Tues) — Fine Arts in Education Coalition general meeting
7 p.m. at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.
Patrons interested in supporting fine arts education in SAISD are invited to attend. Topics will include the group’s executive board elections and their annual bowl-a-thon fundraiser. Coalition members comprise a group of parents, students and music educators who advocate improving all educational aspects of the fine arts.

March 30 (Wed) — Spurs to ‘Team Up’ with Voices for Animals
1:30 p.m. (event start) at Highlands High School, 3118 Elgin Ave.
Point guard Tony Parker (ETA 2 p.m.) has been invited to show his support as animal advocates from this Southeast Side school contribute food and supplies for Paws Ranch Rescue. His attendance is in honor of Highlands being among 20 area “Team Up Challenge” schools that received $2,500 in seed money from Silver & Black Give Back, formerly the Spurs Foundation, to help their communities. Through their club Voices for Animals, Highlands students rescue strays and raise funds to pay for any veterinary care they may need. A shelter dog also will be available for adoption at this event.

This is among meetings hosted by the School Board and SAISD bond team that are being held in all SAISD Trustee districts to provide information on the progress and upcoming projects for the $515 million multiyear building improvement program.

5 to 11 p.m. at Simple Simon’s Pizza, 5739 Callaghan Road
A portion of all food and beverage sales will benefit the Jefferson High School Lasso Alumni Association which supports San Antonio’s most famous rope twirlers. The Lassos are scheduled to perform at 7 p.m., and ropes, T-shirts and limited edition Lasso Fiesta medals will be available for purchase. Host for this event is restaurant owner and Jefferson class of 1976 alum Jo Ann Karambis.
