Students will have the opportunity to learn about the design industry by meeting with architects and electrical and mechanical engineers.
April 30 (Sat) — Jefferson Architecture Department collaborates on design charette
9:30 a.m.to 4 p.m. at the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio, 200 E. Grayson St., suite 200
High school students from throughout Bexar County will devise infill designs – structures for vacant plots of urban land – appropriate for historic neighborhoods. Projects will be presented on May 7, and awards given for the best creations. The charettes are a collaborative effort between SAISD’s Jefferson High School Architecture Department, the city of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation, and the San Antonio Architecture Foundation.
April 30 (Sat) — The Met: HD Live in Schools program
Noon at the Regal Fiesta 16 Stadium Theatre, 12631 Vance Jackson Ave.
Giuseppe Verdi ‘s suspenseful romantic drama “Il Trovatore” featuring lilting gypsy tunes is the final of four live opera broadcasts that select District middle school choir students and their directors will see this semester. SAISD is among school districts nationwide chosen for the Met program that provides opportunities to experience New York’s Metropolitan Opera performances beamed directly from the Lincoln Center.
April 30 (Sat) — Fine Arts in Education Coalition of S.A. Bowl-A-Thon 2011
2 to 4 p.m. at Oak Hills Bowling Lanes, 7330 Callaghan Road
Proceeds will benefit the SAISD Showcase T-Shirt Art Competition. Registration fee is $15 per person or $80 per six-person team. For information on participating and/or to contribute to this worthy cause visit sponsor Fine Arts in Education Coalition of S.A. Facebook page.
May 1 (Sun) — Asian-Pacific Heritage Month Family Day
1 to 5 p.m. at the San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones Ave.
District elementary students and their families will celebrate these cultures through hands-on activities including the making of Indonesian shadow puppets and Japanese-style illustrations, and also enjoy Asian and Pacific-inspired refreshments and entertainment. The event is free to District youngsters and their families, and is part of an ongoing series sponsored by SAISD and the San Antonio Museum of Art.
May 2 (Mon) — Annual Golf Fore Excellence
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Golf Club, 9800 Hyatt Resort Drive
Again this year local business leaders and patrons will hit the greens for a good cause. A dinner celebration, auction, and awards ceremony featuring a variety of prize categories will conclude the day’s festivities. All proceeds will go toward the SAISD Foundation. Title sponsors are AT&T, Clear Channel and State Farm Insurance. Tournament co-chairmen are Leo Gomez of San Antonio Spurs and Entertainment, and Derrick Howard of the Freeman Coliseum. The foundation is a 501 c3 whose main purpose is to facilitate SAISD student achievement, develop and recognize staff and teacher excellence, and strengthen partnerships in the community.
May 2 (Mon) — Jefferson Architecture students to present Woodlawn Lake improvement plan
6 p.m. at the UTSA Downtown Campus Buena Vista Theatre, Buena Vista at South Frio streets
Students from SAISD’s Jefferson will be among teens from three area high schools with proposals on improving this landmark 62-acre recreational waterway. The presentations are part of participation in the ACE Mentor Program of Greater San Antonio Inc. for architecture, construction and engineering students.
May 2 (Mon) — SAISD Bond 2010 community meeting
6 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
Hosted by School Board Assistant Secretary Olga M. Hernandez, this concludes the series of meetings held in all seven SAISD Trustee districts to provide information on the $515 million multiyear building improvement program. The community will be updated on the bond timeline and project status, as well as have the opportunity to ask questions, give input and meet the bond management team.
May 3 (Tues) — Theme park field trip
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Morgan’s Wonderland, 5223 David Edward’s Drive
Pre-kindergarteners and special-needs children from SAISD’s Carvajal Early Childhood Education Center will be treated to a visit to this fully-accessible, family-friendly fun park. Funding for the field trip was provided through an Extended Learning Outreach grant.
May 4 (Wed) — Production of ‘Valhalla’
7 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
Drama students will present their award-winning rendition of this comic epic set in 1880s Bavaria and 1940s Texas. The public preview precedes Edison’s performance of it on May 10 at the state University Interscholastic League’s 4A one-act play contest. The thespians qualified for this level of competition by virtue of their first place finishes at previous meets. In lieu of a set price of admission, donations will be taken at the door.
May 6 (Fri) — Radio Disney wellness visits
2 to 2:45 p.m. at Foster Elementary School, 6718 Pecan Valley Drive
Representatives from the popular radio network Radio Disney AM 1160 will present health and fitness tips.
May 7 (Sat) — Presentations and award ceremony for design charette
11 a.m.to 3 p.m. at the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio, 200 E. Grayson St. suite 200
Infill designs appropriate for historic neighborhoods that were created during the April 30 charettes will be presented starting at 1:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. awards ceremony. The day’s activities will begin with a lecture on preservation architecture. These events are collaborative efforts between SAISD’s Jefferson High School Architecture Department, the city of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Perseveration, and the San Antonio Architecture Foundation.
May 7 (Sat) — Lanier High School students to take part in SystemsGo rocket launch
11:20 a.m. at the Hillview Ranch, 4259 Rural Route 1323 Country Road, Willow City
Science Research and Design students from SAISD’s Lanier High School will launch Buzz Lightgear in culmination of their year-long SystemsGo aeroscience project. They will be among students representing more than 40 participating high schools statewide setting off their rockets at this site near Fredericksburg. This will be the second consecutive year Lanier – that served as the District’s pilot school for the SystemsGo curriculum in 2009-10 – will participate in the launching.
