For the second time in less than 10 years, a veteran SAISD employee has been recognized by the San Antonio Area Association for Bilingual Education for her excellence and commitment to teaching those whose first language is not English.

Luz Garcia-Martin was named SAAABE’s Bilingual Administrator of the Year at the Alliance for Multilingual Multicultural Education’s national conference held earlier
this month.

“My commitment to bilingual education and second language acquisition is steadfast," she said. "It is imperative that we continue to develop quality research-based programs for
our students in order to ensure their success.

“If we educate our students, and educate them well, they will be strong contributors to our state and U.S. economy. I am proud to represent all
10,470 English-language learners in SAISD.”

Garcia-Martin has served SAISD since 1987, and as department senior coordinator for Bilingual Education/ English as a Second Language/ Languages Other Than English for
eight years.

She also earned the SAAABE award in 2002 as principal of Herff ES.

The honor is bestowed upon those considered to be the “ultimate leader” in supporting and exemplifying excellence in bilingual education.

As the local recipient, she is a nominee for the statewide award.
