May 14 (Sat) — Election Day

Voters who reside in Trustee Districts 2, 5 and 6 will decide their School Board member for the next four years.
May 16 (Mon) — ‘Show Your Shoes’ campaign award presentation
1:15 p.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh St. at Babcock Road
El Rey Feo – who issued the initial participation challenge – and representatives from campaign sponsor Capital One Bank will reward this school’s first place finish with $1,000. During the run of the Fiesta-time contest, students collected 634 pairs of new shoes for the needy, the most of any school. In addition to the prize money, Maverick also won a meal from the Black Tie Affair Catering Company. The name for the bank’s campaign came from the traditional call of “show us your shoes!” to Fiesta royalty during the Battle of Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades - many of whom reveal they are wearing cowboy boots, fluffy slippers or decorated sneakers under their elaborate gowns.
May 17 (Tues) — ‘MILK’ program presentation
Noon to 6 p.m. at Gates Elementary School, 510 Morningview Drive
Farmers Insurance representatives will provide parents with details on the Missing Information on Lost Kids program, the first step in the Amber Alert system. They will learn how using Home Organizer software to store their child’s digital photo and identification number can improve the possibility of a fast recovery should the worst occur. Because these vital documents can be easily shared with local authorities and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, information can be disseminated quickly. Gates is the first of two SAISD elementaries to host the presentation this month.
May 17 (Tues) — Annual White Rose induction ceremony
6 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave
Members of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy’s class of 2018 will be welcomed into their new community by accepting a white rose as their names are called. The ceremony is in honor of their selection as incoming 6th-graders this fall at San Antonio’s first and only all-girls public school.
May 17 (Tues) — Fine Arts in Education Coalition general meeting
7 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s Street
Recipients of the 2011 Fine Arts in Education Coalition Scholarship will be honored. Patrons interested in supporting fine arts education in SAISD are invited to attend. Coalition members comprise a group of parents, students and music educators who advocate improving all aspects of the fine arts.
May 18 (Wed) — SAISD students win ‘Celebrate America’ creative writing contest
2 p.m. at Laurie Auditorium, on the Trinity University campus, 1 Trinity Place
Three Bonham Academy 5th-graders swept the competition’s public schools category, placing first, second and third. They will read their winning essays as part of a naturalization ceremony conducted by Western District of Texas U.S. Magistrate Judge John W. Primomo.

May 19 (Thurs) — ‘Safe Routes to School’ program presentation
6 p.m. at Longfellow Middle School, 1130 E. Sunshine Drive
Parents will learn about this initiative aimed at improving childhood health, pedestrian safety, and the surrounding environment by encouraging kinder through 8th-graders to walk or bicycle to school. This Northwest Side campus is among several schools identified as eligible for funding for amenities including sidewalks, pedestrian/bicycle crossings, on-and off-street bicycle facilities, and traffic diversions. The program is offered in partnership with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and the city’s Department of Public Works.
