May 21 (Sat) — ‘Cap and Gown’ celebration and family barbecue
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cooper Academy, 1700 Tampico St.*
Principal Joseph Zatarain will cook up a meal of hamburgers, hotdogs and kielbasa sausage with all the trimmings for approximately 100 seniors who attend this school for former dropouts and for their families. Acting as servers will be school staff. In addition to enjoying the feast and fellowship, class of 2011 members will pick up their caps and gowns, and have the opportunity to pose in them for pictures taken by a professional photographer. Cooper – which opened in 2009 – also recently celebrated its 200th graduate. * For this event, access to the school will be on Navidad Street, behind Cooper’s main entrance. This also is where the barbecue grill and outdoor dining will be set up.
May 21 (Sat) — Parent Resource and Activity Day
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
More than 100 parents of special needs students and their children are expected to attend. While mom and dad visit with vendors to learn about services and resources available to them, kids can enjoy fun and games. This fourth-annual event is sponsored by SAISD's Department of Special Education Parent Support Program, located at the YWLA campus.
May 23 (Mon) — Bike Rodeo
9 a.m. at Bonham Academy, 925 S. St. Mary’s St.
Students astride their iron horses will test their skills by competing in a variety of events. Bike Rodeo is part of the San Antonio Police Department’s bicycle safety program.
May 23 (Mon) — UTSA ‘Opera to Go’ performance
9 to 9:45 a.m. and 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Schenck Elementary School, 101 Kate Schenck Ave.
Select members of the school’s Showstoppers Choir will take the stage with the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Lyric Opera for “Brundibár.” The theme of this 1938 children’s opera written by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krasa during Nazi rule is about bullying, and will be presented in correlation with Schenck’s “Our School is Too Cool to be Cruel” anti-bullying campaign.
May 23-24 — College preview
9:45 to 11:45 a.m. at the St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus, 800 Quintana Road
SAISD’s Page Middle School students will explore their future higher education options, as well discuss traits required for lifelong success. Attendees are participants in the GAMER (Giving Americans Motivational Education for the Real World) program.
May 23-26 — Pre-kinder and Head Start Program ‘roundup’
7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 11 SAISD schools
Applications will be accepted for children eligible for pre-kinder or the federal Head Start program this fall. To qualify, a child must be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1 and meet other criteria based upon need. For more information call -222-8591.
May 23-27 — SAISD Elementary School Choral Festival
9:30 to approximately 11:15 a.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive
This annual musical extravaganza features performances by students Districtwide.
May 24 (Tues) — Radio Disney wellness visit
2 to 2:45 p.m. at Brewer Elementary School, 906 Merida St.
Representatives from this popular radio network will present health and fitness tips.
May 25 (Wed) — Career Day
9 to 11:30 a.m. at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.
Starting with keynote speaker Mayor Julián Castro, representatives from a wide variety of professions will tell students about their careers.
May 26 (Thurs) — Career on Wheels Day
8:30 a.m. to noon to at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh St. at Babcock Road
Presenters will include representatives from VIA Metropolitan Transit, the San Antonio Fire Department, the San Antonio Police Department, the U.S. Postal Service and others whose professions are closely-affiliated with vehicular transportation.
May 26 (Thurs) — ‘MILK’ program presentation
Noon to 6 p.m. at Barkley-Ruiz Elementary School, 1111 S. Navidad St.
Representatives from Farmers Insurance will provide parents with details on the Missing Information on Lost Kids program, the first step in the Amber Alert system. They will learn how using Home Organizer software to store their child’s digital photo and identification number can improve the possibility of a fast recovery should the worst occur. Because these vital documents can be easily shared with local authorities and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, information can be disseminated quickly.

May 27 (Fri) — Jefferson on PARADE AWARDS and CHUCK WAGON Bar BQ dinner
5 to 7:45 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
Kicking off this Mustang traditional end-of-the-school-year celebration will be the Red/Blue spring football game, followed by a parade and awards presentation. Outstanding alumni including Mayor Julián Castro have been invited to this event which also marks the time to bid farewell and “yawl come back“ to the current crop of seniors – as well as greet the coming year’s student leaders. Entertainment will be provided by student groups, and snacks and a barbecue dinner will be served chuck wagon style in the school cafeteria.
