3 p.m. at the Buena Vista Theatre, One UTSA Circle
Youngsters from the District’s Graebner Elementary School will take the stage with the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Lyric Opera for a production of “Navarro.” Penned by San Antonians Jim Balentine and Joe Labatt, the children’s opera was inspired by Marj Gurasich’s book “Benito and the White Dove” which details the life and accomplishments of José Antonio Navarro – a 19th-century champion for Texas independence – as seen through the eyes of a young boy. First-graders will portray animals while 4th-graders will lend their singing talents to the production. Graebner was the only school invited to perform.
Sept. 26 (Mon) — ‘Ask an Astronaut, Scientist and Congressman’ program
10 a.m. at New Tech High School (on the campus of Sam Houston High School), 4635 E. Houston St.
Students will be given an inside look into government and science through presentations and Q-and-A sessions with astronaut Andy Thomas, Dr. Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute and 21st District U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith. New Tech High School - a school within a school that debuted this year and is located at the Sam Houston campus – was specially selected because of its focus on technology and project-based learning.
Sept. 26 (Mon) — Radio Disney presents Healthy Living Around the Clock
9 a.m. at Bonham Academy, 925 S. St. Mary’s St.
Representatives from the popular radio network Radio Disney AM 1160 will provide students with fun health and fitness.
Sept. 27-28— Ready, Set ….Bond community meetings
Patrons are invited to continue providing input to architects for master-planning efforts, as well as learn about the latest updates, and to begin discussions on the look and feel of their schools. Following are the final in this second in a series of meetings on SAISD Bond 2010 held at the 23 schools undergoing major renovations.

Sept. 27 (Tues) —AVID Family College Awareness & Pizza Night
6 p.m. at Mission Academy, 9210 S. Presa St.
On the menu will be pizza, family fun, door prizes and an opportunity for parents to learn how they can support the school’s efforts in helping make their child’s dreams of higher education come true. The activities are part of the school’s participation in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program to provide a college preparatory path. The evening will culminate with the signing of commitment letters for the students’ futures.

Sept. 28 (Wed) — Kickoff a Winning Season with RIF Be A Reader tour
9 to 10 a.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh St. at Babock Road
Second-graders at this Northwest Side school will be treated to stories by guest reader Miss Anastasia's Wacky Storytime Book Reading. Invited guests include District 1 City Council Member Diego Bernal, Tom Buddig, executive vice president of Buddig Lunchmeats, SAISD Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Durón, Deputy Superintendent Betty Burks and other dignitaries. The 2nd-graders also will receive a book for their home libraries to encourage and inspire them to read in their free time. Maverick is the only San Antonio campus selected for this 10-city, nationwide back-to-school tour sponsored by Reading is Fundamental and Carl Buddig & Company to nourish young minds.
Sept. 28 (Wed) — INSPIRE Awards showcase and presentation
5:30 p.m. at Villita Assembly Building, 401 Villita St.
The District’s past, present and future outstanding shining stars comprised of alumni including Mayor Julián Castro and District 26 Texas Rep. Leticia Van De Putte – along with current teachers – will be honored for making a significant difference in education and for their ability to inspire others. Preceding the awards presentation to start at 7 p.m., guests will have the opportunity to tour educator and student showcases and enjoy entertainment provided by some award-winning student performers. Proceeds from the price of admission will fund scholarships for District students. Event sponsor is the SAISD Foundation, a 501CR public charity that exists solely to support the District’s schools, programs and teachers.
