Oct. 1 (Sat) — Classic Car and Vintage Fashion Show to feature SAISD’s T.J. Fashionistas
7 p.m. at Market Square, 514 W. Commerce St.
The city’s Primer Sabado’s observances will showcase classic cars and fashions from the 1940s through ‘60s including clothing designs by – and models from - SAISD’s Jefferson High School. Known as the T.J. Fashionistas, these fashion design students under the direction of teacher Sandra Starr represent the only high school invited to participate.
Oct. 3 (Mon) — Major grant announcement
1:30 p.m. at the SAISD Central Office Board Room, 141 Lavaca St.
A joint news conference for SAISD and the Harlandale ISD will be held to announce that the school districts have received a total $27 million grant for college readiness, with SAISD receiving $21.5 million while HISD’s share is $5.6 million.
Oct. 4 (Tues) — SAISD students to beautify Beacon Hill through the Graffiti Box Project
10 a.m. at the west side of Grant between Mulberry and Agarita avenues
Through funding from the city’s Brush Over Graffiti Program, students from Beacon Hill and Cotton elementaries and Twain Middle School were invited to create artwork to cover Grande Communications cable boxes. The pilot for the Graffiti Box Project calls for adorning nine of the boxes with plans for expansion throughout the Beacon Hill community. Event sponsor the Beacon Hill Area Neighborhood Association selected Oct. 4 as the date for this beautification celebration to coincide with National Night Out observances.
Oct. 4 (Tues) — Marching Band Showcase
6:30 p.m. at Alamo Stadium, 110 Tuleta Drive
This annual fall treat for half-time show enthusiasts features marching musicians from all District high schools and middle school-level bands. Admission is free, and the festival is open to the public.
Oct. 5 (Wed) — SAISD students to compete in fourth-annual Best-Tasting Salsa competition
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Phillip’s College, 1801 Martin Luther King Drive
Culinary arts students from the District’s Burbank High School will defend their title as 2010 champions. They will be among teens from six high schools including SAISD’s Phoenix Middle College competing in this event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Again this year cooks will be required to incorporate ingredients kept secret until start time into their salsa. Among those invited to serve as judges are Diana Barrios of Los Barrios Restaurant and consultant Jesse Perez, a renowned chef and Burbank alum.
Oct. 5 (Wed) — Magnet School Fair
5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta St.
Fifth- and 8th-graders from throughout Bexar County are invited to learn about educational options offered through Magnet programs hosted by eight SAISD high schools and three middle schools.
Oct. 6 (Thurs) — Author’s visit
9 a.m. at Bonham Academy, 925 S. St. Mary’s St.
R. L. Stine – known as the Stephen King of children’s literature because of his horror fiction novels – will treat 4th- and 5th-graders to a reading of his “Who Let the Ghosts Out?”. The Magic Theatre – near this King William-neighborhood school – is sponsoring the author’s visit through a National Endowment of the Arts grant.
Oct. 6 (Thurs) — Read for the Record
10 a.m. at Woodlawn Elementary School, 1717 W. Magnolia, and
1 p.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh St. at Babcock Road
Pre-kinder through 1st-graders at these near-Northwest Side campuses will be among SAISD elementaries joining in a nationwide shared-reading attempt to break the 2010 record of more than two million readers. Among the guest readers will be SAISD Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Durón and Trustee Ed Garza at 1:00 p.m. at Maverick Elementary, and State Board of Education member Michael Soto will read at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Elementary School. This year’s selection – “Llama Llama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney – tells of Baby Llama’s separation anxiety after Mama Llama tucks him into bed at night. Read for the Record is sponsored by Jumpstart for Young Children in partnership with the Pearson Foundation.
Oct. 8 (Sat) — SAISD students to participate in ‘Chalk It Up’ annual street art festival
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Houston Street between Main Avenue and Jefferson Street
Every autumn concrete is their canvas when youngsters from throughout San Antonio – including those from seven SAISD’s schools - join professional artists in adorning a prime downtown thoroughfare in chalk. The performing and culinary arts also will be featured through music, and food and refreshment booths. This annual celebration of creativity is presented by Artpace San Antonio along with numerous business and civic partners.
Oct. 8 (Sat) — ‘Estilo Street’ to feature SAISD’s T.J. Fashionista
10 p.m. at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts District, Brazos and Guadalupe streets
Again this year the work of student designers from SAISD’s Jefferson High School and their teacher Sandra Starr will be modeled during the “Estilo Street — Runway En La Calle” fashion show. The program is part of the evening’s “Una Noche de la Gloria” festivities. In addition to fashion design, the annual event also showcases West Side artists, musicians, filmmakers, and writers.
