SA Business Journal names Bassett among area's best CFOs

His ability to balance trying financial times with providing SAISD and its taxpayers with a quality return on its investment has earned the District's associate superintendent of Financial Services, Business Operations and Food Services a well-deserved accolade.
Steven Bassett is one of 11 area Chief Financial Officers named among the best by the San Antonio Business Journal.
“It is an honor to receive this award and to be able to represent SAISD as its CFO," Bassett said.
"Of course, I would not be able to accomplish anything of significance without the ongoing support of the entire Finance and Business Operations team. It is a humbling experience to have the privilege of leading a group of dedicated and highly-qualified peers.”
He and the other honorees will be recognized during a Nov. 4 luncheon reception at Oak Hills Country Club.
While most were selected for particular categories including largest company or nonprofits, in some cases, such as Bassett’s, “the Business Journal was so impressed with the candidates, the committee created wild card categories,” the magazine stated.
He was nominated by SAISD Foundation Chair Carri Baker Wells, who cited his role in building the District's fund balances. As a result of these efforts, Fitch Ratings revised SAISD's financial outlook from negative to stable last December, saving millions over the life of the bonds for SAISD Bond 2010.
"Which means a greater investment in the classroom," she wrote.
Bassett's nomination also was supported by District 15 state Rep. Rob Eissler, who wrote he relies upon his expertise and input in trying to find efficiencies in school operations statewide.
Prior to joining SAISD in 2008, Bassett was North East ISD's director of budgets and financial control.
