Dec. 4 (Sun) — First Sunday for SAISD families
1 to 5 p.m. at the San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones Ave.
District employees, students and their families are invited to celebrate the event’s theme “5,000 Years of Chinese Jade” through hands-on activities including creating carvings of animals and dragons, and watching a jade-carving demonstration. Entertainment will be provided by the San Antonio Lion Dancers. First Sunday is part of an ongoing series sponsored by SAISD’s Department of Fine Arts and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Admission is free for all SAISD participants.
Dec. 5 (Mon) — News conference on attempt to set world record
10:30 a.m. at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César Chávez Blvd.
Details will be announced about the Lanier High School community’s attempt to set a tamale-making world record and a call will be issued for volunteers to help achieve this feat.
Dec. 7 (Wed) — U.S. Army All-American Bowl band invitation ceremony
9 a.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland at South St. Mary’s Street
An official invitation will be extended to Fabian Gomez to join the All-American Marching Band’s drumline. He will be the second consecutive Brackenridge High School percussionist selected nationwide to perform with the U.S. Army All-American Band. Fabian will be among 125 teens taking the field during halftime of the game to be played Jan. 7 in the Alamodome.
Dec. 7 (Wed) — Pep rally for the San Antonio Food Bank
10 a.m. at the Knox Early Childhood Education Center, 302 Tipton St
A pep rally will celebrate a large number of non-perishable food donations to the San Antonio Food Bank. Contributions are coming from students, staff and parents as part of a holiday food drive.
Dec. 8 (Thurs) — Second Annual Holiday Dance Extravaganza
7 p.m. at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St.
“An Evening of Dance” will showcase the talents of dance teams Districtwide.
Dec. 8 (Thurs) — Performance of Handel’s Messiah
7 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
A combined choir will present this holiday classic in Jefferson’s beautiful and historic auditorium. In addition to the host campus, singers will represent SAISD’s Brackenridge, Edison and Lanier high schools, and the Young Women’s Leadership Academy. Joining them will be professional soloists and an orchestra. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 736-1981.
Dec. 9 (Fri) — Annual Rodriguez Tamalada
8 to 10:30 a.m. at Rodriguez Elementary School, 3626 W. Cesar Chavez Blvd.
Students and their parents will celebrate a timeless holiday tradition by making tamales.
Dec. 9 (Fri) — The 17th-annual De Zavala La Tamalada
8:45 to 10 a.m. at De Zavala Elementary School, 2311 San Luis St.
Each year the making and eating of tamales provides pre-kinder through 5th-graders and their parents a tasty culmination to lessons on how mathematics and science are important in cooking. Corn husks will be filled with masa and meat that morning, and the cooked product enjoyed during a party that afternoon.
Dec.10 (Sat) — Eastside community block party
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St.
City Year San Antonio teams from Sam Houston High School, Martin Luther King Academy, and S.J. Davis and Wheatley middle schools will host this event to include activity tables, some with holiday-themed crafts, to engage guests and provide more information about the participating campuses. The party also will feature food, live music, resource and information tables from local agencies, a disc jockey, step and dance show, and a dessert bake-off.
Dec. 10 (Sat) — Tenth annual ‘Visit with Santa’
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SAISD Police Department, 1702 N. Alamo St.
Again this year St. Nick will make an early Alamo City appearance especially for approximately 300 pre-selected SAISD 3- to 9-year-olds. Youngsters will arrive throughout the day to meet and be photographed with the jolly old elf, receive gifts and enjoy refreshments. The majority of Santa’s stash for his annual special guest appearance was provided by toy drives at the District’s middle and high school campuses facilitated by event sponsor, the SAISD Police Department.
Dec. 10 (Sat) — SAISD students to participate in third annual Gingerbread Workshop
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or while supplies last) at the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio, 200 E Grayson St. suite 110
Aspiring architects from Jefferson High School will assist children in making and designing their very own edible creations. The workshop - sponsored by the Architecture Foundation of San Antonio - is free and open to the public.
Dec.10 (Sat) — The Met: HD Live in Schools program
2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Regal Fiesta 16 Stadium Theatre, 12631 Vance Jackson Ave.
Students from about 45 SAISD high schools will watch the opera “Faust” as it is broadcast live, in high-definition, from the Met stage in New York. This free event - providing many students an opportunity to see opera for this first time - is made possible by a partnership between the District and the Met through its HD Live in Schools program. SAISD is one of two dozen school district partners and the only in the region to take part.
