Jan. 14 (Sat) — Greater SA All Stars After-School Challenge Volleyball Tournament
8 a.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
Fourth- and 5th-graders representing SAISD’s Beacon Hill, Briscoe, Forbes, Green, Smith and Stewart elementaries will test the volleyball skills they have been learning in their After-School Challenge programs. Boy and girl teams will alternate each quarter, and trophies will be given to those placing first and second. Play will be dedicated to charities the schools are sponsoring including the Alamo Breast Cancer Organization, Ronald McDonald House of Charities, San Antonio Animal Care Service and St. Vincent de Paul Food and plaques will be presented to organization representatives. This is the first in a series of tournaments to be held this semester which will include other sports, and is part of the students’ health and nutrition studies.
Jan. 14 (Sat) — MLK Super Saturday
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Davis Middle School, 4702 E. Houston St.
Students will honor the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through learning activities including preparing for the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness accountability exam and through fun exhibitions such as dance. The event will be part of the “A New Day at Davis” project funded through a Texas Title 1 Priority Schools grant and sponsors will include the Phi Delta Kappa Sorority and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Jan. 14 (Sat) — ‘Largest Mono-Print in Texas’ exhibit and photo shoot
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Alamo Stadium, 110 Tuleta Drive
The public is invited to view "Who Are We? Where Do We Come From? Where Are We Going?" which will be displayed and photographed on the stadium’s field. This compilation of 33 unique prints includes some created by art history students from SAISD’s Brackenridge High School, and depicts the merging of Meso-American and European myths and cultures to form the New World’s hybrid heritage. Working with the students were professional artists Kim Bishop (their teacher) and Luis Valderas. Preparation also included an internship with Art3 in collaboration with the Artpace Semester Project Program. Other collaborating artists for the project were Paul Karam, flimographer James Borrego, photographer Luis Garza and Expose the Heart Photography. Due to its size, the piece being called the “Largest Mono-Print in Texas” was printed by use of a steamroller at the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center’s parking lot. Event day musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Refried and food served by Rocker Dogz Gourmet Street Dogz.
Jan. 14 (Sat) — Martin Luther King Jr. 16th Annual Memorial Chess Tournament
10:30 a.m. (round one) at Mission Academy, 9210 S. Presa St.
Student game board enthusiasts of all grades and levels of chess proficiency from throughout Central and South Texas are invited to compete. The tournament honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King is an official MLK weekend event.
Jan. 14 (Sat) —SAISD students’ book signing
2 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 15900 La Cantera Parkway
Fifteen District students in grades 8, 9 and 11 will be among 21 Young Achievers members signing copies of “Change Yourself-Change the World.” This is the fourth book the group has published in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio.
Jan. 14 (Sat) — Performance of ‘West Side Story’
7:30 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive
The school’s drama department will present this Broadway musical set in 1950s New York City about a modern day Romeo and Juliet – Tony and Maria – who are members of rival gangs who fall in love. Ticket price is $6 in advance and $8 at the door.
Jan. 16 (Mon) — Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday
All schools and most offices will be closed.
Jan. 17 (Tues) — School Board recognition reception
4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.
The contributions of SAISD’s Trustees will be honored at a reception celebrating Texas School Board Recognition Month. The regularly-scheduled monthly meeting will follow.

Jan. 18-21 — Production of ‘The Producers’
7 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
Fine arts students will perform this Mel Brooks classic cult comedy about a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant who plan to bilk their backers by deliberately producing a flop. Instead, the show is a smash hit. Ticket price is $5 in advance and $8 at the door.
Jan. 20 (Fri) — Visit from former congressman
1 p.m. at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St.
Ciro Rodriguez – who served first the Texas and then the United States houses of representatives between 1987 and 2011 – will meet with students.
Jan. 21 (Sat) — Social Studies Department Annual Winter Conference for grades K-12
8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s Street
This year’s theme will be “Around the World in 180 Minutes.” The annual conference, sponsored by SAISD’s Department of Social Studies, will include half- and full-day sessions focusing on hands-on interactive strategies, literacy and economics.
Jan. 21 (Sat) — SAISD students to present at Mid-Winter Trade and Industrial Vocational Conference
1 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. at the Omni Hotel at the Colonnade, 9821 Colonnade Blvd.
Lanier High School’s SkillsUSA students have been invited to share two presentations with educators nationwide. The first will be their award-winning anti-bullying campaign. Their second - Teach Beyond the "X" – is designed to show teachers how they can help get their students excited about learning. Posters for this event were created by Lanier advertising design students and printed by the school’s print shop.
