May 5 (Sat) — SAISD Elementary and Secondary Teacher Job Fair
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Marriott Plaza Hotel Hidalgo Ballroom, 555 S. Alamo St.
Initial screening interviews will be held for fully-certified educators and teacher candidates enrolled in alternative certification programs who are qualified to teach pre-kinder to grade 5, or for one of the District’s pre-kinder to grade 8 academies (8 a.m. to noon) and for secondary grades (1 to 4:30 p.m.). Interviews also will be conducted for counselors, librarians, nurses and coaches. Applicants may park free nearby at SAISD’s Central Office lot, 141 Lavaca St. The application process begins online at www.saisd.net.
May 6 (Sun) — Lanier High School students to launch twin rockets
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hillview Ranch, 4259 Rural Route 1323 Country Road, Willow City
Again this year Science Research and Design students from SAISD’s Lanier High School will participate in the SystemsGo aeroscience project. For the first time they will send two rockets up into space – Blue Lightning and Voknova. The Lanier team will be among students representing more than 60 high schools statewide at thr blastoff site near Fredericksburg. Rockets will be launched every 20 minutes with the order determined that day.
May 7 (Mon) — Top-performing schools announcement according to Children at Risk
10 a.m. at Austin Academy, 621 W. Euclid Ave.
The District’s Austin Academy has been selected to host a news conference at which Children at Risk will announce their 2012 list of top-performing schools in the Greater San Antonio area comprising six counties. Austin has ranked among the Houston-based advocacy group’s top five campuses in the middle school category for 2011 and 2010. It is expected that some SAISD schools will be recognized.
May 7 (Mon) — Annual Golf Fore Excellence Tournament
12:45 to 1 p.m. gunshot start, and 6 p.m. dinner and celebration at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Golf Club, 9800 Hyatt Resort Drive
Local business leaders and patrons will hit the greens for a good cause. A dinner celebration and awards ceremony featuring a variety of prize categories will conclude the day’s festivities. Title sponsors are Waste Management and Mullen Pension & Benefits. All proceeds will go to the SAISD Foundation, a 501 c3 whose main purpose is to support educational excellence and innovation in the District’s schools. Donations to this year’s event will bring the total amount of funds raised by the Foundation to more than $1.5 million dollars.
May 9 (Wed) — Jefferson architecture students to compete in national design competition
6 p.m. at the UTSA Downtown Campus Buena Vista Theatre, Buena Vista at South Frio streets
Students from SAISD’s Jefferson will be among teens from two area high schools to present proposals on San Antonio waterfront development. Jefferson’s project will address the need to revitalize San Pedro Creek in conjunction with transformation of the adjacent Via Metropolitan Transit System site. The presentations are part of participation in the ACE Mentor Program of Greater San Antonio Inc. for architecture, construction and engineering students.
May 10 (Thurs) — ‘TIPS’ celebration
5 p.m. at Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.
SAISD’s approximately 200 middle school-level students representing 17 campuses will be honored for their successful completion of the Duke University Talent Identification Program. Through TIPS, qualified 7th-graders are eligible to take the same SAT college admissions exam administered to high school students.
May 11 (Fri) — Texas Bluebonnet Books luncheon
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh Place at Babcock Road
Students that participated in the Battle of the Bluebonnets contest sponsored by the Texas Library Association will be recognized and treated to a special luncheon. Awards will be bestowed and the school’s faculty Bluebonnet king and queen crowned. The competition – held to promote a lifelong love of reading - tests teams of 3rd-6th-graders on their knowledge of 20 books nominated for that year’s Texas Bluebonnet Award.
May 11 (Fri) — Decorate a Cake for Mom Day
1 p.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh Place at Babcock Road
Assisted by a professional baker, participating students will personally adorn a cake in honor of upcoming Mother’s Day. The baker, cakes, icing and decorations will be from H-E-B #3, 108 N. Rosillo at West Commerce streets. Event sponsor is the school’s PTA.
