May 19 (Sat) — Fun/Run Walk
8:30 a.m. at Bowden Elementary School, 515 Willow St.
The event featuring fitness and fun will include music and other entertainment along with games and free books for children. Registration will start at 7 a.m. Sponsors include school staff, the Dignowity Hill Neighborhood Association, H-E-B, KLRN-TV, the Rollie Pollie Bike Club, the San Antonio Public Library and Select Federal Credit Union.
May 19 (Sat) — Got N.E.W.S.? healthy lifestyle celebration
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. a Highlands High School, 3118 Elgin St.
The importance of nutrition, exercise, water and sleep will be highlighted with vendors and service providers representing a variety of companies and organizations available to answer questions and offer information. Sponsors will include more than dozen entities.
May 19 (Sat) — ‘Cap and Gown’ barbecue celebration
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cooper Academy, 1700 Tampico St.*
Home liaison Louis Robles, assisted by director/principal Joseph Zatarain and other staff, will cook up hamburgers, hotdogs and kielbasa sausage with all the trimmings for approximately 100 seniors who attend this campus for former dropouts. School employees also will act as servers. Guests - who will include the students’ families - may dine outside or in the Cooper cafeteria. In addition to enjoying the feast and fellowship, class of 2012 members will pick up their caps and gowns and have the opportunity to pose in them for pictures taken by a professional photographer. Cooper opened in 2009 and recently celebrated its 350th graduate. * For this event, access to the school will be on Navidad Street, behind Cooper’s main entrance. This also is where the barbecue grill will be set up.
May 21 (Mon) — Butterfly Remembrance Memorial Ceremony for Chris Madrid
9 a.m. at Cotton Elementary School, 1616 Blanco Road
Family members of the late restaurateur have been invited to this event honoring his life that will include a poetry reading and presentations of a plaque, banner and butterfly-motif stained glass artwork. The commemoration also is an expression of appreciation for Chris Madrid’s support of the school which is near the popular eatery that bears his name. Madrid passed away earlier this year at the age of 61.

May 22 (Tues) — Business Fair
9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Phoenix Middle College, St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus, 800 Quintana Road
Seniors and juniors will present projects directly connected to the college-level courses they are taking and judges will be representatives from related career fields. Between 11 and 11:30 a.m. School Board President Ed Garza will recognize Phoenix student Mahalia Garcia, among those from SAISD to graduate with perfect attendance since kindergarten. Through the Phoenix program students attend St. Philip’s College and simultaneously earn college and high school credit.
May 22 (Tues) — ‘Excellence in Education’ news conference
10 a.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
Carri Baker Wells, SAISD Foundation chairman, and Interim Superintendent Sylvester Perez, will announce that educational projects submitted by 35 District employees will receive a total of more than $95,000 in grants. This is one of the largest amounts ever given since the foundation was formed in 2007 to fund innovative instructional activities to benefit SAISD students. Following the news conference, the winners will be notified through surprise visits that day and throughout the week.

Noon at Aldaco’s Restaurant Sunset Station, 100 E. Hoefgen Ave.
This will be the final gathering of the year for high school students Districtwide who meet throughout the year to provide input to SAISD Trustees.
May 22 (Tues) — AVID graduation and college commitment ceremony
2:30 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
Seniors will receive medals for their participation in the college preparatory program Advancement Via Individual Determination and also will sign letters of commitment to the colleges and universities they plan to attend.
May 22 (Tues) — Ready, Set …Bond renovation and design meeting
6 p.m. at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St.
SAISD Bond 2010 design team members will present images showing the latest designs and layouts for planned renovations at the school.

6:30 p.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 620 McIlvaine St.
The public is invited to meetings of PTA chapter representatives Districtwide.
May 23 (Wed) — Financial Literacy class graduation ceremony
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Frost Bank, 100 W. Houston St. at Main Avenue
Economically-savvy students from SAISD’s Highlands High School will be honored at a commencement ceremony and luncheon celebrating their successful completion of this program sponsored by Frost Bank.
May 23 (Wed) — Jefferson community ‘Ready, Set …Bond’ renovation and design celebration
6 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
SAISD Bond 2010 design team members will present images showing the latest designs and layouts for planned renovations at Jefferson and its feeder campuses Woodlawn Academy, Fenwick Elementary and Longfellow Middle School. Student projects also will be displayed and entertainment provided by student performing groups.
May 23 (Wed) — Distributive Education Clubs of America 11-Annual Banquet
6:30 p.m. at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive at South St. Mary’s Street
Marketing Education Program students and staff will express their appreciation to parents and business partners by treating them to dinner.

Members of the class of 2012 who are graduating from the school’s prestigious International Baccalaureate Magnet program will be honored.
May 23 (Wed) — Fox Tech High School mariachi invited to perform with renowned conductor
7 p.m. at San Fernando Cathedral, 115 Main Plaza
By special invitation, the award-winning Tech-alitlan will perform with Alondra de la Parra. The famed founder and artistic director of the New York-based Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas is in town for concerts sponsored by Texas Public Radio.

8:30 to 8:50 a.m. at Maverick Elementary School, 107 Raleigh Place at Babcock Road
Kindergartners may invite the VIPs in their lives such as moms, dads, grandparents, etc., to school for poetry readings and muffins.
May 24 (Thurs) — 2012 Art Showcase
5 p.m. at the Alamo Convocation Center, 110 Tuleta Drive
Art enthusiasts can view creations representing a variety of mediums – ranging from traditional water color paintings to multidimensional displays -crafted by students from all grade levels. Each spring this event is held to promote the value of an art education in developing higher-order thinking, cultural awareness, and creativity. “People’s Choice” and “Teacher’s Choice” awards will be determined based upon the number of stars patrons and instructors place beside their favorites. The elementary, middle and high school students whose artwork garners the most will receive ribbons and their pieces will be displayed at the Burnet Center, 406 Barrera St.

Aspiring architectures from SAISD’s Jefferson High School will be among those recognized for their participation in the ACE Mentor Program of Greater San Antonio Inc. for architecture, construction and engineering students.
