June 4 (Mon) — New kitchen construction kickoff celebration
3:45 p.m. at Hillcrest Elementary School, 211 W. Malone Ave.
Festivities will celebrate work to start this summer on a newly-renovated kitchen, and entertainment will include a performance by the school choir. Slated for a fall completion, the kitchen is the final project for this South Side campus funded by SAISD Bond 2010.
June 5 (Tues) — Fifth-grade luau
1:30 to 3 p.m. at Cotton Elementary School, 1616 Blanco Road
Fifth-graders will be treated to a Hawaiian-themed party featuring music, dancing, beach balls and refreshments. Highlights will include the crowning of the class tiki queen and king.
June 5 (Tues) — Spring Carnival
3 to 7 p.m. at Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 W. Huisache Ave.
Games, music, food, and fun will mark the end of the 2011-12 school year. Proceeds from a silent gift basket auction will benefit the teachers’ fund.
June 5 (Tues) — College Night
4:30 to 6 p.m. at Edison High School, 701 Santa Monica Drive near Blanco Road
Representatives from more than 50 colleges and universities have been invited to provide information to students and their parents.
June 6 (Wed) — Last day of schoolJune 6 (Wed) — Big Decision Day Bash
9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alamo Stadium, 110 Tuleta Drive
Seniors throughout the District will enjoy fun activities focusing on their futures such as “packing for college/life” relay races and publicly declaring their choice for college, career or the armed services. Music, giveaways and lunch also will be provided, and keepsakes will include T-shirts, autograph books and a panoramic photo. The occasion not only will offer seniors an opportunity to say goodbye to their campus classmates but to their friends from other high schools as well. As members of SAISD’s first GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness for Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) group, the class of 2012 is particularly close knit from having spent a lot of time together since 6th-grade when their participation in this college-prep program began.
June 7 (Thurs) — Navarro High School graduation ceremony
7 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
June 9 (Sat) — Yard sale to benefit Voices for Animals
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Highlands High School, 3118 Elgin Ave.
The community is invited to take advantage of bargains on a variety of items including books and home and office furnishings while supporting a good cause. Proceeds will benefit Highlands Voices for Animals club, through which students rescue stray dogs and cats and pay for any veterinary care they may need prior to being made available for adoption. Representatives from Animal Care Services will attend to answer questions and provide information on the proper care of pets.
June 8-10 — Eight SAISD graduation ceremonies to be streamed live online
Again this year the webcast is made possible through a partnership between NOWCastSA, and SAISD’s Media Magnet program at Brackenridge High School. Video production will be operated by students and their teacher Robert Blackard, while NOWCastSA technicians will stream the videotaped signal live onto the Internet. June 8-29 — Summer enrichment for elementary school students
7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Huppertz, 247 Bangor St.; Woodlawn, 1717 W. Magnolia Ave.; and Woodlawn Hills, 110 W. Quill Drive
Supervised academic and enrichment opportunities including art, guitar lessons, Zumba dance, martial arts and field trips – some of which centered around a theme - will be offered in partnership with the Greater San Antonio All Stars.
June 9 thru Aug. 3 — Summer recreation
7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays at Franklin Elementary School, 1915 W. Olmos Drive
Supervised recreational opportunities will be offered in partnership with the YMCA.
