SAISD Board names Perez lone finalist for superintendent
May 20, 2013 – The San Antonio ISD Board of Trustees voted tonight to name the District’s Interim Superintendent Dr. Sylvester Perez as the lone finalist for superintendent. State law requires a 21-day waiting period after the finalist is chosen before officially appointing a superintendent and executing a contract.
His appointment follows the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Robert Durón on Feb. 20, 2012.
“The Board has been very pleased with Dr. Perez’ performance as interim superintendent and we believe he is the right person to continue leading this District forward and to help us progress to the next level,” said Ed Garza, SAISD board president.
A native of San Antonio, Dr. Perez has provided more than 38 years of service to Texas school children, including 13 years as superintendent in the Mathis, Clint, San Marcos and Midland school districts. Prior to becoming a superintendent, he held positions as principal, assistant principal, athletic director, teacher and coach. He has held the role of interim superintendent in the past, as well.
He was among five finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2006. He has an extensive record of student achievement and was involved in successful bond elections at each of the four school districts where he served as superintendent.
In addition to his roles in the K-12 public education system, Dr. Perez has served in the higher education system. He currently is an adjunct professor with the University of Texas at Austin's Cooperative Superintendent Program and has served as an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Dr. Perez also has served in statewide capacities and presented at numerous education conferences. He has served as secretary for the Texas School Alliance, a group of superintendents representing one-fourth of all school children in Texas; on the Board of Directors for the Texas Academic Decathlon and on the Executive Planning Committee for the Texas Association of School Administrators. He was the first Hispanic elected to the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) Legislative Council and is the only Legislative Council member to also have served on the State UIL Executive Committee.
“After more than a year of getting to know the larger SAISD community, including members within our District family and those outside, I can sincerely say it’s a great honor to be selected as a finalist for the permanent superintendent,” said Dr. Sylvester Perez.
