On Tuesday, Oct. 9, SAISD parents will come together for a half-day conference, known as the Parent Summit, that includes speakers and breakout sessions designed to motivate, inspire and inform parents, while giving them valuable tools to add to their parent toolbox.
Included in this year’s line-up is a session about districtwide efforts to increase rigor in reading and writing, during which parents will be given journals and asked to join the effort to write daily. All students and employees also have been given their own journals this year.
Parents also will be able to participate in two 45-minute breakout sessions that offer an array of topics, from how to turn waiting time into fun and education time, presented by Trustee Patti Radle, to a 101 session on college financial aid. There also will be a session featuring parents who will share their experiences of navigating the college process and sessions for parents of special-needs children. The day will be topped off with some moving, Zumba-style!
Suggested times
9:25-10:05 a.m. – Parents will receive journals and participate in a writing exercise during a session on rigor in reading and writing instruction.
10:45-11:30 a.m. – Trustee Patti Radle will teach parents how to use games to turn waiting time into fun and education time.
11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Parents will offer first-hand perspectives on navigating the college process and ensuring their children went on to a college education.
12:40-12:50 p.m. – Parents will get a taste of Zumba and learn more about free community classes at the close of the event.
