What: Computer lab benefactor to be treated to personal thanks at facility
When: Oct. 24 (Wednesday), 10:30 a.m.
Where: Young Women’s Leadership Academy, 2123 Huisache Ave.
Students at the all-girls Young Women’s Leadership Academy will now have additional resources to support the school’s technology focus and nurture creativity thanks to a new computer lab and editing and design software donated by the Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation.
On Wednesday, a classroom of students will thank Mr. Najim, executive chairman of Sirius Computer Solutions, Inc., during an opening event at the school, where the girls also will showcase the more advanced work they can do on the new Dell computers, using the Adobe Creative Suite and Photoshop software programs. The $58,432 grant, awarded to the SAISD Foundation for this project, paid for 29 new computers, as well as software licenses.
However, the gift goes beyond hardware and software, with female members of the Sirius Computer Solutions executive leadership team expected to attend the event to provide their insights and experience to the young women. The Young Women’s Leadership Academy, San Antonio’s first all-girls public school, opened in August 2008 as a tuition-free college-preparatory school that focuses on math, science and technology.
Last year, two students produced a short documentary about the historic pecan shellers strike using video taken on their mobile phones and edited on their home computers. The girls’ project made it to the National History Day Competition in Washington, D.C., last summer, and Principal Delia McLerran believes the new computers and editing software will allow the girls to compete at an even greater level this year – just one example of the positive impact of the donation.
